Officer Involved Shooting Suspect Fatally Injured
Santa Barbara- February 12th, 2017
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is releasing more information about the officer involved shooting that occurred last night, February 12, 2017 just before 9:00 p.m. in the 600 block of Russell Way. The suspect has been identified as being 26-year-old Bryan Carreno of Santa Barbara. Carreno was shot and fatally injured as a result of the officer involved shooting. Next of kin have been notified.
The initial call to the Santa Barbara County Public Safety Dispatch Center came in at approximately 6:30 p.m. from a family member at a home in the N. La Cumbre area who reported that Carreno was inside the garage and was hallucinating, acting out and possibly under the influence of drugs. Carreno left the house and the Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls from residents who reported seeing him in their backyards and in their homes. Sheriff’s deputies with the assistance of a Sheriff’s K-9 Unit and a Santa Barbara County Sheriff/Fire Air Support Unit helicopter responded and began looking for the suspect. They spent several hours tracking the suspect who was reportedly jumping fences and going in houses and at one point was on the roof of a home. A large kitchen knife was located in the ground outside one of the locations and information was obtained that he was potentially armed with hatchet.
At approximately 7:45 p.m. an emergency notification was sent to neighbors advising them to shelter in place due to the search for a potentially armed suspect in the area. At approximately 8:40 p.m., a resident in the 600 block of Russell Way called to report that a suspect had been in their home and had rifled through the kitchen drawer. About ten minutes later, the residents at that location located deputies on scene and informed them that the suspect was possibly inside their home. Sheriff’s deputies entered the residence in an effort to determine if the suspect was still inside. They observed the suspect inside armed with a large kitchen knife and stepped back outside. In spite of repeated commands to drop the knife, the suspect exited the house and advanced on the deputies with a knife in his hand. He was shot multiple times. Deputies rendered first aid and summoned medical personnel. Carreno succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured during the incident.
The Coroner’s Office is conducting a death investigation to determine the official cause and manner of death which is pending toxicology and lab results.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the case. Once the case is complete, it will be forwarded to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office for an independent review. As is standard in officer involved shooting cases, there is also a Departmental Administrative investigation underway to determine if proper policies and procedures were followed.
Per Sheriff’s Office policy, the five deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
Carreno is known to law enforcement and has been arrested on charges of domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and alcohol related violations.
The Sheriff’s Office is requesting anyone with information regarding this incident who witnessed the suspect in the area or who believes he may have entered your yard or residence to call the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division at 805-681-4150.
