Commercial and Residential Burglars Arrested After Assaulting Deputies

Goleta - April 26th, 2017

Two suspects believed to be responsible for burglarizing a residence in the unincorporated area of Goleta near North Beaches and a business in the city of Goleta were arrested Tuesday night after resisting arrest.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 24, 2017, deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Goleta Valley Patrol Bureau Patrol responded to a residence on Arroyo Quemada Lane after a homeowner returned to find two suspects (one male, one female) fleeing from his residence. The victim reported that the suspects stole tools and cash from inside the residence. Deputies searched the area but were unable to find the suspects.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday April 25, 2017, deputies assisted by the Isla Vista Foot Patrol and University of California Santa Barbara Police Department responded to a report of shoplifting in progress at a business in the 6800 block of Hollister Ave. in the city of Goleta. The loss prevention agents in the business reported that two suspects (one male, one female) were loading up their carts with merchandise and attempting to leave the business.

After arriving on scene, the male suspect, later identified as 38-year-old Michael Rasmussen of Lompoc, exited the business with stolen merchandise. When deputies and officers attempted to contact Rasmussen, he fled towards additional businesses in the complex. He was eventually apprehended, but during the process, he violently resisted arrest and pushed, grabbed and struck deputies. Rasmussen also removed a replica handgun from his waistband. Deputies and officers were able to overcome his resistance and handcuff him. Rasmussen and one Sheriff’s deputy received minor injuries and were treated on scene by American Medical Response personnel.

The female suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Dakotah Matzie of Lompoc, was then contacted inside the business while she was concealing stolen items in her clothing. Matzie also violently struggled and resisted arrest until deputies and officers were able to take her into custody.

Deputies recognized that these suspects matched the descriptions of the residential burglary suspects from Arroyo Quemada Lane. During their investigation, they were able to develop probable cause to also arrest Rasmussen and Matzie for that felonious crime.

Rasmussen provided deputies with a false name to conceal a felony warrant out of Lompoc Superior Court and was out on bail from a separate felony offense. Controlled substances, drug paraphernalia and stolen property were also located inside the couple’s vehicle.

Michael Rasmussen was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $75,000 for the following charges: Battery on an officer causing injury, Felony Resisting arrest, Shoplifting, Residential Burglary, Possession of drug paraphernalia, Possession of Heroin, Providing a False Identity, Possession of stolen property, Committing a felony when out on bail for a felony, Urinating in Public and the felony warrant.

Dakota Matzie was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $50,000 for the following charges: Attempt Shoplift, Residential Burglary, Resisting Arrest, Possession of drug paraphernalia, Possession of Heroin, Possession of stolen property.
