Pedestrian Fatally Injured by Train in Montecito
The decedent who was fatally injured when he was struck by a train yesterday, June 8, in Montecito has been positively identified as being 61-year-old Paul Welterlen of Santa Barbara. Next of kin has been notified.
An investigation into his death has revealed that his death was an apparent suicide.
Montecito - June 8th, 2016
Just after 3:00 p.m. today, June 8, 2016, a male pedestrian was fatally injured when he was struck by a northbound Amtrak passenger train in Montecito at Butterfly Lane and Hill Road. The train conductor observed the pedestrian on the train tracks. He sounded the horn and attempted to make an emergency stop but was not able to avoid hitting the pedestrian. The adult male was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sheriff-Coroner’s Office is conducting a death investigation and is in the process of making a positive identification. An official cause and manner of death will not be determined until the completion of toxicology and lab results.
