Heat Exhausted Youth Rescued From Local Trail

Santa Barbara - June 19th, 2016

Just before noon on Saturday, June 18, 2016, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Emergency Dispatch Center received a 9-1-1 call from an off-duty nurse hiking on Rattlesnake Trail.  The nurse called to report a 14-year-old Santa Barbara hiker was experiencing heat exhaustion approximately one mile up from the trailhead near Skofield Park.  The teen initially started the hike with his father but had run up the trail on his own, overexerted himself, and became dehydrated.

Members of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SBCSAR) team along with fire personnel from the Montecito Fire Protection Agency, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Santa Barbara City Fire Department and U.S. Forest Service responded to assist as mutual aid.

A team from SBCSAR hiked in and reached the teen. They started first aid to treat him and cool him down until paramedics arrived.  After evaluating his medical condition, it was determined the best course of action was to place him on a medical stretcher and wheel him down the trail. With the assistance of personnel from the combined fire agencies, the teen was safely carried out.  After further evaluation it determined he had recovered sufficiently and he was released to his father on scene.

All hikers are reminded to prepare and take extra precautions as temperatures are expected to be in the extreme range during the coming weeks.  Please make sure while hiking to drink plenty of water and take frequent rest breaks in the shade to cool down.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, is a trained, all-volunteer unit of the Sheriff’s Office that is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  For more information,
