Sheriff's Statement Regarding Court Order to Release Inmates
Santa Barbara- June 21st, 2013
Please see the attached press release from the California State Sheriffs’ Association regarding the court order to release state prison inmates. I am including a statement from Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown regarding the decision.
“The order by the Three-Judge Panel deals a heavy blow to public safety in California. Prematurely releasing 9,000 state prison inmates who are ill-prepared to reenter society is an irresponsible act that defies common sense. Doing so in the wake of criminal justice realignment, which transferred custody and supervision responsibility for tens of thousands of other felons to California's counties, exacerbates preexisting problems at the local level and endangers people throughout our state. Releasing prisoners by expanding already generous early-release credits degrades our state's criminal justice system. I strongly support Governor Brown's request to stay this order and appeal this Three-Judge Panel's state prison population cap to the United States Supreme Court."
