A Santa Barbara Senior Drives Into Front Entrance of Trader Joe's in Goleta Seriously Injuring Shopper

Goleta - October 8th, 2016

At approximately 9:45 a.m. this morning, October 8, 2016, a 35-year-old Santa Barbara resident was seriously injured when a red Toyota Prius crashed into the front entrance of Trader Joe’s in the 5700 block of Calle Real in Goleta and struck him.  He was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and is in stable condition.  Two juveniles inside the store were treated at the scene for minor abrasions.  The driver of the Prius, an 85-year-old Santa Barbara man, received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.  Remarkably no one else was hurt during this incident.

Personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, American Medical Response and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office responded.  The collision is under investigation by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Major Accident Response Team.  While the cause of the collision has not been determined, it appears that while the driver was in the process of parking he drove at a high rate of speed into the front entrance of the store.  Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor in the collision.  The driver was cooperative at the scene and was released.

If you have any information regarding the collision, you are asked to call Senior Deputy Jeff Farmer at 805-961-7514.
