Ultralight Pilot Fatally Injured Following Crash at Goleta Apartment Complex
Goleta - December 7th, 2016
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the name of the Ultralight pilot who was fatally injured yesterday, December 6, 2016, when his aircraft crashed into a carport at a Goleta apartment complex and then onto an unoccupied parked vehicle. The decedent has been identified as being 45-year-old Matthew Erwin Wilson of Santa Barbara. Next of kin has been notified.
The Ultralight had just taken off from the Santa Barbara Airport at approximately 10:04 a.m. and went down shortly after takeoff at 10:09 a.m. in the 60 block of Willow Springs Road. Personnel from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Santa Barbara Airport Operations and Santa Barbara Airport Patrol responded to the scene. Personnel from the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board responded as well and are conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
The Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office is conducting a death investigation to help in determining an official cause and manner of death.
